HOW TO ADOPT YOUR BEST FRIEND |
ADOPTION FEES (Cash or checks only. We do not accept credit cards):
ALL ADOPTED ANIMALS MUST BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED. Adoption fees include: A physical performed by a local veterinarian that includes a fecal check for worms, spay or neuter surgery, a microchip for identification, and first round of shots for rabies, distemper, and parvo. You will pick up your new buddy from the veterinarian's office normally one day after surgery for females and same day for males. If you want additional veterinarian services, you must contact the veterinarian directly prior to the surgery date and pay for those services at the veterinarian's office. Please Click Here to view photos and descriptions of our Adoptable Animals. Once you locate a companion, the following will occur. We require you to visit the shelter, meet the pet that your are interested in, be interviewed, fill out the adoption contract, and pay the adoption fees with cash or money order. We do not accept checks. We will schedule the pet for procedures at a local veterinarian. You will pick up your new best friend from the veterinarian's office as explained above. You will be asked a few questions about your history dealing with animals, your source of income to provide for the pet, and be required to thoroughly read and complete our contract. All applications will be considered, however, we reserve the right to refuse any adoption. Once all paperwork has been completed, you may take your new pet home if it is UNDER six months old. You are required to take your puppy or kitten the the vet within three days for its first veterinarian visit. When your pet is six months old, you MUST return to the vet to get the pet spayed or neutered which is included in the adoption fee. After your puppy or kitten has been spayed or neutered, return to the shelter to obtain your $25 refund. If your new pet is OVER SIX months, we will schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. We will take the pet to the veterinarian on the scheduled date and you will pick up your new best friend from the veterinarian's office normally one day after surgery for females and same day for males. Only adult dogs and cats may be adopted by out of state residents, we do not adopt kittens and puppies under six months old to out of state residents. If you are planning to adopt from our shelter and reside out of state, you must visit the pet at the shelter and also be interviewed by a shelter employee. A veterinary referral is required. Adoption process is same as above, so keep in mind that you will be required to pick up your new buddy from a local Newport veterinary after surgery. And don't forget - cash only!

HOW YOU CAN HELP |
VOLUNTEERS work side by side with the staff on a daily basis. These people are true animal lovers and the staff appreciates them deeply. You are welcome to volunteer in the following areas: Assist with cleaning, pet, walk, groom, or just spend time playing with the animals. Your time with an animal will improve their chance of adoption. Volunteers under 16 must be with a parent at all times. Volunteers over 16 must be capable of working unsupervised. Release must be signed by parent. Volunteers can schedule their work hours - you help decide what duties and hours you are comfortable with. Call Lisa at 423-623-1010 to get started. The "FRIENDS OF THE ANIMAL SHELTER" welcome new members with ideas, time, and energy. They meet the second Monday of each Month in the conference room of the Newport City Hall at 6:00PM. Our local volunteer, 501c(3), fundraising organization works closely with the shelter to help raise money, educate the public, and provide volunteers to the shelter. The Friends of the Animal Shelter also raise money for their low income public outreach spay and neuter Prevent A Litter Program. Applications are available at the shelter. To donate to the Prevent A Litter Program mail checks to: Friends of the Animal Shelter, P O Box 42, Newport, TN 37822. OUR SHELTER NEEDS: Pet supplies such as kitten and puppy dry and canned food, blankets for bedding, flea drops for cats and dogs, a pet scale to weigh large dogs, Kuranda Pet Beds, live animal traps, pet crates, stainless steel pet bowls, cat balls, adjustable dog collars, dog leashes, newspapers to line kennels, litter box supplies, bleach, laundry detergent with color safe bleach, fabric softener sheets, paper towels, air fresheners, gel hand sanitizer, and a pickup truck! Lost Pets |
Everyday someone reports a missing pet to the shelter. Everyday several pets are brought to the shelter. The problem is matching the pets to the owners. Help us get your lost pets back home by having your pet microchipped. Microchips contain a number which can be traced to you. They are the size of a grain of rice and are injected under the pet's skin. Shelters have scanners that look for microchips. Lost pets often loose their collars, but microchips don't fall off. Purchase a $15 microchip from the shelter. Buy a collar and an ID tag with your name, addrsss, and phone number. Visit your veterinarian to get your pet spayed or neutered, microchip injected, vaccinated, then put the rabies tag on the collar. Last but not least, put the collar with the tags on the pet. When your pet is missing go straight to the animal shelter. Next go to the newspaper and radio stations to place lost pet ads. If everyone followed these simple steps, we would be able to decrease the number of animals that are euthanized at our shelter. Our number one objective is getting your lost pet back into your loving arms, but we can not do that if your pet comes to the shelter without any type of identification.

Who We Are |
We are the Newport Animal Shelter funded by City of Newport taxpayers. We function as an Animal Control Facility for Newport and Cocke County, receiving animals from both Newport and Cocke County Animal Control Officers. Our dedicated caring staff includes our shelter director Dr. Carol Hood, animal control officers Emmit and Chip Rollins, along with 3 kennel aids, Lisa Layman, Christine, Amber Rowe, and Erica Jenkins . All employees clean throughout the day, care for the animals, and assist visitors. Our employees are all animal lovers who care for the shelter pets just like you do for your family pets. We also have several wonderful volunteers that help with various duties at the shelter. The shelter is also under the watchful eye of the Animal Control Board, a dedicated group of volunteers including a police officer, local veterinarians, and 6 concerned citizens approved by the City Council. The Animal Control Board meets the second Monday of each Month at the animal shelter at 12:30PM. The "Friends of the Animal Shelter", our local volunteer, 501c(3), fundraising organization, works closely with the shelter to help raise money, educate the public, and provide volunteers to the shelter. The "Friends of the Animal Shelter" meets the second Monday of each Month at City hall at 6:00PM. The Newport Animal Shelter accepts calls from citizens that live in the county and forwards them to the County Animal Control Officer, Billy Meadows. The Cocke County Animal Control Officer does not work for the Newport Animal Shelter. He is an employee of the Cocke County Mayor and the Cocke County Legislative Board, "CLB". Please contact them if you need additional information about County Animal Control.

What We Do |
We are an animal control facility and a shelter. We enforce local and state codes, as well as issue citations. We educate the public about responsible pet ownership, pet over population, and safety issues for animals and humans. There are thousands of homeless cats and dogs in our county, most of these eventually end up at our shelter. Our facility was built to house approximately 65 healthy animals and 15 in isolation; however, we usually have double that. We quarantine bite case animals for rabies observation. We humanely euthanize dangerous, sick, injured, or unwanted animals. We accept stray, dangerous, and owner surrendered animals from Newport and Cocke County at no charge. Some of our shelter animals are adopted by animal rescue groups. A few are sent to training facilities to become police dogs, rescue dogs, or seeing eye dogs. We make every effort to reunite lost animals with their owners. Many of our animals are adopted into permanent homes by loving families.Adoption fees include spay/neuter surgery, microchip, shots for rabies, distemper, parvo, and fecal worm check.
